snowie- Thank you so much for the reassurance. The nurse just acted like it was horrible that the sizes were all over the place. This weekend I really did a good job of keeping busy and not worrying, but today not so much. Where are you in your cycle?
I hope that everyone is doing well. Best of luck!

kbug- I think it is absolutely norml for them to grow at different rates. I have only done one IVF cycle but all the way up to retreival I had some"8's" some "13's" etc I even had one at like 20 when I still had 8 and 10's so dont worry about it seems normal to me.
As far as the hormones just take some quiet time anytime you can because there is nothing you can really do about them since so much is going on in your body. Good luck keep us posted.
Dottie- the other site is Daily Strength. Just google Daily Strength and you will find it. There are a LOT of good posts on there.

Alright ladies, I don't feel well at all. I am on day 6, and I feel so yucky. I can cry at the drop of a hat and I feel like I am the size of a house. My right ovary is not cooperating and none of the follicles on the left ovary are growing at the same rate. I am exhausted and tired of needles. How do you guys find the bright side? Has anyone else had their follicles all be at different stages? I am wondering if they will have a growth spurt and all end up around the same.

I'm currently on day 5 of Lupron 10 units and I've got breast tenderness and swelling, but the past 2 days I've been getting cramping in my feet--mostly the right foot. I was up all last night with a very uncomfortable foot cramp. A new side effect I experienced this morning was nasuea. Anyone have these same side effects?

Thx for the response. I'm laughing about your advice not to stare at the needle too long and just do it!

Hi AJET615 - I'm up working late and just saw your post...
I've never done shots in my outer thigh, so maybe someone else can answer. But I can tell you that for me, it doesn't hurt going into my hip. The physical insertion of the needle doesn't hurt. It just slides right in. (If you go back to my post on 5/22, I explained how I do the shots in the hip.)
You might feel some "weird" sensations that are slightly uncomfortable if you move your leg during the shot into your hip. You want the muscle relaxed on that side.
The shots are easy. You could get sore later, like bruising, but the actual shots are fine. You'll be okay.
One last comment: Whether you are doing the shots or your hubby, don't stare too long at the needle. Just do it. It slides right in just like the little lupron needles. Don't worry. You will do fine. We all do!
<====[ (That's my emoticon for the needle!)

I currently going through IVF...started Lupron on Monday and boy due my breast hurt!
I'm having anxiety about the progesterone shots. Which injection site hurts the least--outer thigh or back of the hip? Any tips to make it any less painful? Can you compare the pain to anything?

Dottieb- The "cyst" is not producing estrogen, so they think that it isn't really a cyst. Great news though, and I just gave myself the first injeciton and you are right... it is not bad at all. My arm is already blue and green so I can only imagine around day 7. I am excited about your follicles let us know when your retrieval is scheduled. Good luck.

kbug- I am sorry about the cyst. They didn't see it earlier? If not, it might be a blessing in disguise- maybe that has been the problem and can be easily dealt with, hopefully.
Today went well, the rumor of smaller needles for blood work is a rumor- the ladies just kind of laughed at me when I asked! Oh well, I love having green and blue arms small price though. I am on day 7 with 6 measurable follicles and we'll see on c#8 tomorrow. I may be scheduled for egg retrieval Tuesday, we'll see.
Good luck, hopefully you can be a member of the injection club tonight- it's not bad, really.

snowie- thanks so much for the list of abbreviations that is very helpful\
dottieb- I hope that everything went well for you this morning.
As for me, I just finished with my first ever IVF suppression check, and on the ultrasound they say a cyst on my right ovary, so I am not even sure if I will be able to start my meds tonight. They are checking an estrogen level to see if the cyst is an active cyst or if it is scar tissue or something else benign. Hopefully it is nothing because I just got myself pumped up to start this process.

Dottieb- Thanks for the advice about the needle; I will be sure to ask for that. My first u/s and bloodwork are tomorrow AM, then tomorrow evening is my first stim. shot. I think that you will be a few days ahead of me in this process, so I look forward and appreciate any words of advice that you can offer me. I am new to the jargon, but I am catching on. The numbers are a little overwhelming and hard to interpret, but again. I think that I will get it.
Good luck everyone! Sending good thoughts your way!

Thank you to everyone who replied about the shots. It doesn't sound like it will be too difficult to do it myself. Good luck Snowie in Sept. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you
We are on to day 7 in the cycle, follicles are measurable and estrodial is rising. I'll report after egg retrieval.
kbug- Beginning this journey seems like a fog, ,but once you start it becomes part of your day and quite inspiring everytime they prick and poke on you a bit of advice- after 6 days of blood being taken- ask for the butterfly needle. My arm is so sore after today- someone in the office suggested to ask for a smaller needle.

I am new to this also. I am now just waiting to start my first cycle of IVF. I am not intimidated or scared of the shots, but this entire process is quite overwhelming. I had stage IV endometriosis, and did not have any symptoms (except for infertility). My doctor would not even offer us IUI, but instead insisted on IVF. I had my surgery in April, and my husband and I opted to try for 2 months and then do a cycle of IVF. You ladies are very inspirational, and I am comforted to know that I am not alone. I am excited to have found you.

Dottieb- I had to give them to myself because my husband wasn't available sometimes. After you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake, really.
Let me tell you, the first time I had to do it, I had my husband watch. I was so shaky and sweating because that needle just looked so big. But I finally psyched myself up and just did it.
A couple of tips: You don't have to turn that far around to get a good spot. It's just a little past your side. If you shoot the right hip, use your right hand to put the needle in. Stand closely next to your dresser on your left leg, keeping the weight off your right leg. Make it so you sort of hold the syringe like a dart. You don't have to do it hard or fast, that needle will go in. I'm assuming you've given yourself other shots, so you know the skin complies easily. Don't think about it too long or stare too hard, just put it right in. And don't forget to pull back to check for blood. The first time you may be scared, but it's easy like all the rest. Also, have all your supplies like gauze or bandaids completely prepped. You don't want to be opening a bandaid package.
I also tried doing it sitting on the bed, but the muscle wasn't relaxed enough like when you stand and keep the weight off of it. But...it did work also sitting on the bed.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Snowie1978- Thank you for the follicle advice. Hopefully we'll have a lot of eggs. Are you going through IVF? Just wondering after reading your egg count etc. We skipped IUI and went straight to IVF, I am on cycle day 4 with no measurable growth of the follicles- day 6 should be better, I hope.
Has anyone had to give the pogesterone shots to themselves? My husband's family is going through very trying times and he has to be in and out of town during the entire IVF process and I was wondering if anyone was successful at giving them to themselves. Good luck to everyone

Dottieb- There is no Right or Wrong count. The more follicles the better because that means more chances for eggs. Not every follicle will contain an egg. For example when it came retrieval time i had about 19 good sized follicles (measuring 15 or bigger) and only 10 eggs retrieved so you would want a high number of follicles. 23 is amazing good luck.

Hello ladies. I am new to this. Today was my bloodwork and ultrasound and first stim shot this evening. Last night my husband and I began our 7 day round of antibiotics doxycycline. If anyone is taking this BE SURE to take it with food as in WHILE you are eating or it causes severe heartburn and swallowing problems. The nurse advised that the side effects will go away in about 24 hours. It is not fun, though- lots of pepto. Does anyone have experience with this? Also, I was reading some of the other posts (snowie1978) and you mentioned that your follicle count was 7, mine was 23- does anyone know what the "right" number is supposed to be? Thanks and good luck everyone

Addis - there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to your follicles. I had about 7 or so when i went in for baseline blood work and then after all the stimming 11 day total i had about 19 follicles biggest measuring 22 smallest about 14. They got 10 eggs from that. My first appointment after starting to stim i only had like 5 or 6 follicles (its hard to remember now bc you go through so much anyway i cried and was so disappointed because i just new i would have like a zillion eggs. But it all worked out i guess. they did get 10 eggs of which 8 fertilized naturally (with out ICSI). And of those eight 4 made it to blastocyst stage. We transferred one. We did get pregnant but the baby stopped developing after 6 weeks and at 9 weeks we had a D&C . We will do a FET with our remaining 3 frozen babies. Hope this info helped. Good luck

hello ladies, hope everyone is doing well. And keeping their spirits up thru everything.
Hop1533- I am sorry for the negative result...as Snowie978 said hope u guys try IVF and that should work.
TPM2 and GirlAtHeart - thanks for the advise and headsup on the injections.
I just want to thank everyone for their advise. Started the luprone shots and it was easy after the first scary one for some reason. Today had my bloodwork and ultrasound and said I have 7 follicles only. Is that good or bad count, can someone advise??!!! My Doc didn't say bad or good amd not how big they are. i Got a call from my nurse blood work was ok without giving me the count but I am good to start Menpour and Follistim 300 IU.. which i did this evening --- it took me almost an hour to take both shot just trying to make sure I did it right. Will return back for lab work and ultrasound in 2 days.
I will make sure to ask questions such as what was my blood level especially the B2 right and the size of the follicles. Can someone let me know what B2 level trigger or affect.
Thanks everyone for your help and support wish everyone the best as well.

Not pregnant, not happy. I took a test on Friday and it was negative, then I started my period that night. I just don't get it. Two miscarriages and then not pregnant at all. My husband and I are starting to run out of financial resources, but we're staying optimistic and are considering all of our options at this point. We have yet to try IVF, but I know it's very expensive. We're also considering adoption but that can be expensive too. We don't want to give up, and we're staying hopeful, but I just wish there were cut and dry answers as to "why" this is or isn't happening. We have another consult on the 20th to see what our options are. I'll keep everyone posted.
Thanks for thinking of me, and best of luck to you.

Thanks lilaquarius! Good luck to you too! We're hoping for a positive reading tomorrow! After 2 back to back miscarriages, I've remained optimistic, it just sucks because I'm aware of the "down-side" of what can happen too. I know others have probably endured far more heartache than I, but as you know, this whole process is an exciting, yet scary time none-the-less.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

OH Snowie I am so so sorry I don't even know what to say, but then again nothing anyone says can make you feel better. I can't even imagine what you must be feeling. I just hope that you are ok and I am always here if you need me, as much as I can be.
I go on Monday for my first visit. I start my estrace on Tues then bla bla bla... Looks like retrieval will be around the 30th and so on. They are doing estrace in hopes for more eggs this time. We will see. I don't really know anymore what to do to feel more positive, but there are so many people that have it worse than I do. So I will shut up now. They are putting me at 450 follistim this time (thats as far as the pen will go out) not looking forward to that shot. Will keep you all posted. Keeping you in my prayers snowie :'(
Welcome to all the new people I have not talked to yet good luck!

Hi everyone, I am also new to this site. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the last 3 years. We tried clomid for 6 months with 1 IUI and it was not successful. In October of '08, we starting seeing a fertility specialist, and after a month of menapur shots, we were pregnant, only to find out a two weeks later that we had a chemical miscarriage. I ended up having a D&C with this pregnancy. We started again this March on the Menapur shots and got pregnant again, only to find out that my levels had not doubled, ending in another miscarriage. It has been very frusterating but we remain very hopeful. In May I started taking pills to lower my estrogen levels. I was on these pills for about 4 days, then I started taking the Menapur shots along with Follistim shots. We had our 3rd IUI done a week and a half ago and we're hoping that the 3rd time is a charm! With the first two pregancies I only had 1 good follicle each, and with this one, I had at least 4 follicles that were ready. We find out on Friday if we're pregnant, and if successful the real test will be on Monday to see if my levels have doubled. That's usually the dreaded day for me as that's when I received the bad news on both of my previous pregnancies. I've been having very light cramps probably the last 3 days, and my lower back has really been bothering me the last 2 days, so I'm hoping that doesn't mean something bad. I'm a little concerned but remain hopeful.
~Praying for our miracle baby...

Hi everyone! I am new to this site. I have endometreosis and have done 6 IUI treatments and am currently doing my IVF cycle for the first time. I am nervous. The medications are not that bad but I had blood work on the 26th and my progesterone is higher than it should be. Doc said we might have to go to plan B and do another IUI treatment instead of not getting good quality eggs. Anybody else with this same situation? Also question for anyone, my doctor said after the transfer I need to rest that day but can resume activies the next day? I am wondering what your doctor's have told you?

Thanks ladies for your advise and kind words to calm me down. Will take it to heart about doing stuff with myself. I am nervous and moods swings. I suppose this will be double with the medics in the next weeks. I am currently on birth control bills and I am getting some shooting pains on my lower left side similar to cramps. I guess this are from my ovluation days??? any thoughts. Just thought to ask. I am scheduled for MT this coming Tuesday and will check with doc & NR.

addis09 - Hi there and welcome!
Hey, don't let my miscarriage talk freak you out. It's all good and positive here.
Please don't be afraid of the shots. They are a piece of cake, really. The Lupron shots are super easy because the needle is so small. I got a few bruises and a little bloated, but that's to be expected. Really, you can handle it.
I took a cocktail of Repronex and Bravelle (I think one of them is like Menopur) and had to do daily shots. I think they are pretty much once a day for the stim drugs. The Lupron for me was every 12 hours like clockwork. Just make sure you pay attention to what your doctor says regarding when to take the shots, if any are timely, etc. Some shots you can slide an hour or so and some you can't, so get the correct information for each.
The hard shot will be the progesterone in terms of it looks like a big needle, scary, etc. But really, we've all handled it. If we can, you can. It's no big deal.
I would advise getting into a procedure for doing the shots - time, room, etc. so you have a routine down and have all the supplies handle. I did that and felt in control and like I had my act together.
Good luck to you!

addis09, I know how you are feeling. I felt the same way right before I started this process. A large box of medication is delivered to your door and when you open the box you are quite overwhelmed(at least I was). I found that when I was about to start a new shot I was very nervous and scared as to how it would feel or what it would do to me. I was very lucky that my mother-in-law is a nurse and gave me most of my shots (I tried todo it myself but couldn't). I found that the shots were not as bad as I had thought they would be. The waiting for results was the hard part for me. I did have a few times that I just didn't feel like myself. I just tried to do something for myself and this seemed to help. Before I started this process I bought several gift cards to my favorite nail salon. I did this so I would have a place to escape and not feel guilty for spending money while we were going though this very expensive process. I would recommend scheduling lots of me time during this process and don't feel guilty it is not an easy process and it will keep you from going crazy over thinking everything. I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted.

Snowie - For me, it took about a week to start bleeding. I stopped meds on a Monday night and finally got my period on Friday. If you want to know what I went through with my miscarriage, read my journal on Daily Strength. Warning: It's graphic.

Snowie1978, I stopped the medication on a Wednesday and started spotting on Friday. The actually bleeding started on Monday and lasted a little more than a week. I had some light cramping but for the most part it was as if I was having a very heavy/long period. Try and surround yourself with with people and things you love and it will all be over before you know it. Be prepared to continue to have blood work done weekly. The doctor will want to see the HCG level back to 0. My level as of yesterday was 36 so hopefully next week will be my last blood test for a while.

Hello ladies. I was just reading thru the post. I am so lucky I came across, by some mystery got an email. Since I will be starting my Lupron meds next week. Which I will start to learn to do the shots. I am fearful and scared of the whole process and I feel I don't know what will happen with those shots and body reaction. As everyone is different. But thanks for the advise and will be looking for more heads-up of your experience. Just how many shots of Gonadotropins FSH (Gonal F) and 75 IU LH & FSH ( Menopur) do u normally take. I know each person is different.
Best of look to all of us who are trying...baby dust to all...

lilaquarius- I hope you have better luck next time. sorry it took so long for me to get back to you I have been kinda sad. My 6 week U/S showed nothing in my sac. And then the next U/S (yesterday) showed the same so I will be miscarrying as soon as my body realizes it and i start bleeding. I sotpped all my progesterone and stuff yesterday so hopefully my nightmare will be over soon.

TPM2- Your story sounds a LOT like mine. I too did my first IVF transfer My 19th. I got pregnant and my levels were actually rising as they should then at 6 week sono nothing in my sac. Then more blood work and levels still rising UGH so another sono was done and still no embryo or HB. I just stopped my meds last night. How long before you started to bleed? That is what I am waiting for now is to start my bleeding and I dread going to the bathroom bc i never know what i am going to find.

I just found this site and wish I would have found it a few months ago. I have just completed my first IVF cycle and what a roller coster ride it has been. We ended up only having one egg which was very disappointing. We then found out that we were pregnant and were so excited. We made the mistake of telling everyone the great news. Four days later after having my HCG level checked I received a call from the doctor that the level was not doubling like it should. This was a red flag that the pregnancy may not be successful. I remember being in the car when I received the news and having to pull over to call my husband (I could not stop crying). The doctor kept me on progesterone and had me come in every two days to check my level. The level kept rising but not like it should have. At the six week mark a sono was preformed. There was a sac but no heart beat. The doctor then had me wait another week (week 7). Another sono was preformed and the same results were found. The doctor then had me stop the progesterone and I went though the process of miscarrying. We are now preparing to try again in August. I don't know what is harder the shots or all the waiting. Our doctor keeps telling us that the plus side to all of this, is that we did get pregnant. We are holding out hope that the second time will be successful.

lilaquarius - So glad to hear you are giving it another try.
I know what you mean when you say you are not looking forward to trying again. You are not looking forward to the drugs, emotions, expense, etc. But I know you ARE looking forward to the opportunity and the chance to be hopeful again.
Good luck to you and keep us posted.
P.S. Are you trying a new protocol or anything?

lilaquarius- Hang in there. I know it's hard, after multiple failures, to imagine succeeding, but it can happen. And I know it's hard to sink still more time and emotion and money into this project, but I'm living proof that persistence does sometimes pay off. Your clinic wouldn't give you the green light if they thought your chances were bad, because they try to protect their statistics too. Good luck.

lilaquarius-- I'm so sorry that you were not successful. I know how much it sucks to think of all the time and energy and emotion and money that you put into this. I've been there-- 4 out of 6 times. My heart goes out to you. Have a big martini. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

lilaquarius77 - I am so sorry to hear that. I know that you are upset and rightly so.
I hope you and your husband are okay. This is just such a rollercoaster ride for all of us with so many ups and downs. I am sending you a big hug.
If you told anyone you were going through this, you should draw strength from them. We only told my sister, and she was a huge support for me (along with all of you on this site) when I miscarried. Lean on those who love you. And take the time to feel what you need to feel - be it grief, anger or sadness.
Please stay in touch on this site. I am in between right now, trying to navigate embryo adoption and child adoption paperwork. It gives me great hope to see the positives on this site and to get encouragement from others, it really does.
I am thinking about you....
