Hello nurho and welcome! Good luck with your first IVF cycle. Hope all goes smoothly and well for you. Lupron is the standard course of treatment for everyone at the beginning of your cycle. It is meant to suppress your natural estrogen production so that the RE's can control when you ovulate and thus, when you are ready for retrieval. It effects everyone a bit different and some people not at all. I've taken it several times now and it has had different effects each time. It can be known to cause headaches commonly. Also, be prepared with all of these meds, to experience some weight gain, bloatedness, and moodiness. It's just part of it!

I would suggest you check in below on the "IVF Buddies" forum. It is the most active one here and you'll meet lots of other women currently in cycle as well.

Again, good luck and welcome!

Hi everyone -- my husband and I are about to start our first cycle and I am sooooooooo nervous & excited. I received my lupron today and I give myself my first injection this Friday. Realizing that everyone's treatment and medication is different, has anyone else used this and what can I expect?

How did it go, Anxious?

Hello everyone. This is my first post. My husband and I are going to start IVF very soon. Well it was suppose to be this week I would have started my injections but unfortunately I had a physical and my blood pressure has been very high. Instead of proceeding with IVF they want me to go and see a High Risk OB-GYN to get the OK to proceeds. As you all know we are very anxious to start all of this. My appt. with the High Risk doctor is January 19 and I am hoping to get an OK to begin. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

11/13/2009 10:24 PM
Yes I did ask. I was told that he showed my stats (labs, b/w, betas, etc) at a medical conference since they have no other explanation why I am not pregnant right now after what he calls a "textbook" perfect cycle then it was concluded that this new protocol will be helpful to me. I did some research and apparently the "booster" hcg shots help your body produce an extra thick lining which is important as we all know during the early stages of pregnancy. I talked with my doctor and he feels really confident that this will work so i am putting it in his and gods hands and praying for the best. I start Lupron on Tues :o)

11/13/2009 9:23 PM
Snowie1978--Hmmm? Did you ask your RE the justification for such a sudden change in protocal and what was his respone?

11/13/2009 11:41 AM
Sorry for duplicate post but I wanted to cover this to anyone and some of you are on different threads....

All- I just spoke to my doctor (well yesterday afternoon) and I have been puzzeled ever since. My procotol has been changed slightly. Originally it was as follows
BCP until 11/24
Start 20 units Lupron 11/17 and (one baby asprin which continues from here on out)
B/W and U/S 11/24
drop to 10 units of Lupron 11/25
Add in 2 mg Estrace and one estrogen patch 11/28
drop lupron to 5 units 12/ 4 and up estrace to 4 mg
new estrogen patch 12/5
B/W and U/S 12/7 increase estrace to 6 mg start progesterone supp x 3 a day (continues until preg test)
12/9 start a steriod pill and antibiotic for 4 days
Transfer 12/11
12/12 drop estrace to 4 mg (which it stays at) and new patch once a week
Now all this is fine and great ...no problems. All of a sudden I got a call from Schrafts that I had a Rx waiting to be filled and I said no I have all my Rx already. They said I had a waiting Rx for a 10000 iu of hCG. Now since I am not triggering I was not sure why I would need this and called my RE. They decided to try a new protocol on me and I will do all the above and add in 1- 5000 unit hCG shot on 12/8 then 3 additional 1000 unit shots on 12/12, 12/15 and 12/18. I do trust my RE to make the best decision I am just confused as to why I would do this? Has anyone heard of this? Has it helped? I only have 3 snow babies and we are gonna transfer two this time so I have no room for error and I am scared about "trying" new things.

addis09--As far as if you can start mid-cycle, I don't see why not. That will be up to the acupuncturist. I had used acupuncture prior to fertility treatment for intermittent pain (knee, shoulder, etc.) and didn't know how to communicate to a practitioner concerning fertility--and I didn't want to take any chances with information getting lost in translation. It was my FS who suggested it after 2 failed IUI's and 1 IVF. He referred me to an acupuncturist that a lot of FS use. I LOVE HER!!! She knows what she is doing and works with a lot of women in our situation. I've seen numerous pregnant women coming in for treatment--one was a day past her due date. I plan to use her through my pregnancy (when I become pregnant) for pregnancy side effects and after to combat post pardom depression. I don't know what part of the country you live, but you can check out her site www.orangecountyacupuncture.com My first visit consisted of a consult and treatment. I kept her informed of what my FS was doing so that she could make adjustments to her protocol and herbs as needed.

Hello all,
Great to hear about how is everyone is doing and read thru your post. As far as the use of acupuncture with fertility treatments, can I do a catch up late in the cycle before the ER? And do you ladies specify what your needs or leave it up to them? I thought to ask as I went one time during my 2nd cycle, eventhough I felt good afterwards but felt very tired after the session. Some updates about this 3rd cycle...it is the longest of the other two. I have a total of 12 Follies six on each side. Their size number range between 21,18,15,14 and others 12 to 10..so my doc will give me additional 1 day to grow... I am at 15 day. other than the medics anything I can do to make them grow...Advise would be great... I am amazed at the 24 size for some of u.

Great to hear all the news of the mommies in our mist...with the u/s and the morning sickness...glad all is well. Best of luck to all the cycle buddies and the ones about to start...

I highly encourage the use of acupuncture with fertility treatments. The success stories are astounding. I've been through 2 failed IUI's and 1 failed IVF. I'm currently at the tail end of my 2nd IVF round and the experience has been completely different. I started acupuncture more than a month before this round and noticed differences immediately beginning with my cycle. I suffer from severe PMDD and this was the first menstrual cycle that I didn't have PMS--my period just came. During this 2nd round of IVF I didn't experience the severe side effects of the meds. During my first IVF round the follicles on my right side really responded and left lagged behind. The growth of my follicles on both sides were not even. During the 1st IVF retrieval 16 eggs were harvested--6 from the left and 10 from the right. The 6 eggs from the left were premature and not viable. Out of the 10 viable 8 fertilized. Transfer took place on day 3. On day 5 I got the call form my FS that none made it to blast, so I knew then that the chances of my preg test being positive were slim. After the first round my FS concluded that my even though my body produces enough hormones for the average woman it doesn't produce enough for my eggs, so he introduced menopur and acupuncture to my regimine. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't experience the side effects of the meds like I did in the first round. Both sides of follicles responded evenly and we were able to retrieve 24 eggs--13 on the right, 11 on the left, 21 viable, and 18 fertilized on Wednesday. My transfer is going to take place either Saturday or Monday. Plan to go in for an acupuncture treatment before the treatment. Overall, I have been extremely pleased with my acupuncture results thus far.

baby4me- I am 30, but I was 29 when all of this started. I had endometriosis, but for my first cycle they were conservative with the protocol, because they thought that I would be an excellent responder. I stimulated for 14 days (the longest 14 days of my life) and we got 7 eggs and only 2 fertilized. They said that my eggs were in really really bad shape. I did a day 2 transfer and I had a pre and post accupuncture treatment on day of transfer. I absolutely loved it. The cycle failed and the plan was for me to take a cylce off and then start again. I continued the accupuncture throughout the "off" cycle and through my 2nd IVF cycle. I also highly recommend "The Tao of Fertility" I followed the diet and did the meditation exercises as well as the accupressure points highlighted in there. My 2nd IVF cycle couldn't have been more different from the first. I only stimulated for 8 days and the accupuncture really helped me be more comfortable in the stimulation process. We still only got 7 eggs, but 5 were mature and all 5 fertilized. 4 of the 5 made it to blast. stage and we transfered 2 on day 5 and froze 2. I am now 8 weeks pregnant with a singleton. I was considered a poor responder and I credit accupuncture with my turn around with egg quality. They said that my 2nd cycle eggs looked like they were from a 30 year old (thank goodness). So I am a believer of accupuncture. I also really really enjoyed my appointments. I really miss them too.I wish you the very best of luck with this cycle. Please keep us informed on your progress. I will be here to answer questions or to give you a boost! Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to let you know to have lots of hope!

11/4/2009 8:41 PM
baby4me...I am several years older than you (42 now but 40 & 41 then) and don't have high FSH. I did do acupuncture on 2 of my IVF cycles and while I did not get pregnant then, I really enjoyed the acupuncture and reaped other benefits from it like sinus help and it took care of my back pain. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant with twins and we used a donor this time. There is a great book called "The Tao of Fertility" that talks a lot about the benefits of acupuncture, herbs, meditation, etc. I read it and really enjoyed it. Just thought I'd mention it in case you want to pick it up. The Dr. who wrote it is based in the LA area. If I lived out there, I'm sure I would have sought out his assistance. Good luck to you and I hope you'll be successful.

11/4/2009 6:31 PM
Hello All,

I have been diagnosed with high FSH. I have had 2 failed IVF attempts. I have had limited follicle growth. The 1st attempt I had 1 follicle, so they converted to IUI. That was not successful. My doctor maxed out all of my meds and I again only had 1 follicle. The one follicle was not even mature enough to convert to IUI. They instead canceled the cycle. They have mentioned embryo adoption or egg donor. I am 33 years old and not ready to give up on my eggs. I am going to give IVF one more shot. I am planning to do accupuncture as well as see a dietician both of which specialize in infertility.
I was just wondering if there is anyone out there that was considered a poor responder, but had a better response with accupuncture.
Any insight or success stories would be greatly appreciated!
I am grasping for some hope .....

11/4/2009 1:32 PM
Had my 2nd u/s today and everything is going well. I have lots of pictures and the 3-D ones really look like a baby instead of a dot. Really cool. Anyway, hope everyone is doing well.

10/31/2009 6:35 PM
kbug....I've been having queasiness since about week 4 also. It has never been too terrible but you know it's there. I've only had the dry heaves a couple of times. For me, as long as I keep a little something in my stomach, I'm OK. I've even resorted to carrying crackers or Nilla Wafers in my purse at all times cause I never know when it's going to hit. I've had it particulary bad during the middle of the night. Other than that, my appetite has been way less than normal. My DH says it's almost a waste of time to take me out to eat cause I just pick. As far as secrets for success, I would just say rest when you need to. Your body will let you know. I've actually had spotting at 4 & 8 weeks for a bit, but not a problem. I'm also just using antibacterial cleanser all the time. I carry it in my purse and use it after every store, restaurant, etc. Hope things continue to go smoothly for you!

10/30/2009 8:40 AM
wannabeamommy- Thank you so much. I am exactly 7 weeks today, and I had not previously been sick, but this morning is a different story. I am so excited that you are 12 weeks, that is amazing! Good luck with your next u/s, and let us know how it goes. Any tips of how to make it through the first trimester successfully?

10/29/2009 6:51 PM
kbug...just wanted to tell you CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy! Isn't hearing the heartbeat such a wonderful, reassuring thing? I am currently 12 weeks. We have our next u/s at 14 weeks and can't wait to see our babies again. I pray you have an easy, stressfree pregnancy and a wonderful experience! Congrats again!

10/29/2009 10:08 AM
Yes, I am so excited for you. Please continue to post updates!

10/28/2009 10:35 AM
kbug- I am on my BCP now for my FET. I start Lupron on 11/17 and transfer is scheduled for Dec 11th. I will keep you all posted how it is going. Congrats on getting your BFP ;o)

10/27/2009 4:15 PM
I have been MIA for a while now, but I wanted to post an update. I did my 2nd ivf cycle just 1 month after my first one failed in August. I am happy to report that I am 6 weeks 4 days pregnant! I had my first ultrasound last Friday and got to see and hear a little heartbeat. It was perfect. I hope that everyone is still doing great! Snowie, when do you start your FET stuff? I hope that everythings goes well for you all! Keep posting...I need to keep up.

10/24/2009 8:42 AM
amedwards- My hCG shot was 10,000 units and I had no complications with that. I did lose the baby though but that had nothing to do with the cycle itself. Just "bad luck" i suppose. Anyway my doctor had told me that if any part of our cycle had to get canceled we would get a refund for the unused monies and if we wanted to try again that a different protocol would be used and we would be responsible for our medicines. And we would have to pay for the cycle (but if money got refunded then only paying for the portion that was used from previous cycle) So i wonder if your clinic has a policy like that as well and that is why they made the offer they did. Good luck.

9/23/2009 11:53 AM
Hello Everyone, I have been off the site for a while. Hope you are are doing well!

Amedwards - I just read your post and am sorry that things didn't work out this time. I guess if it were me, I would ask to get copies of my records to review them.

If your clinic is offering to do something for free, then that means they messed up. They are admitting to some type of error and are also admitting guilt.

To have a clinic not return calls for three days is inexcusable! If you are new in the process, you don't know enough to stand up for yourself and your rights. I was that way. You are a paying customer, investing a lot of time and money into the process. They better call you back everytime you ask a question, even if it's something you think is silly.

Before you jump down someone's throat, I would start by getting a copy of all your and your husbands records. You said one embryo barely hung on. Does that mean they could have transferred it? Did you go out of town and they were trying to reach you about it? Maybe the records will give more information.

I think the main thing is to make sure they communicate well. We had a nurse in training on our second IVF and she usually answered our questions with, "Uh...I guess so. Yeah, I guess that's okay," when we asked medication-related questions. Instills a lot of confidence, huh?

Well, good luck to you. I'm not saying you're going to sue anyone, but I think it would be important to document what you didn't like in writing, send it to the doctor and the clinic's office manager/partners and also have a face-to-face sitdown.

Perhaps they can pay for half your meds as a compromise? Something must have happened on their part. I don't know of any clinics to offer to pay for anything...unless they've messed up in some way...makes you wonder.

Hang in there!

9/19/2009 7:50 AM
I wanted to share my story since I was shocked due to the non-experience of IVF: 1st ivf cycle (May 09): everything went well even though my right ovary never really produced much but they retrieved 8 eggs and that's where my cycle stopped. I don't get my msgs returned for 3 days until I show up and I learn that none survived the retrieval. Out of devastation (and time that I had requested off) we go on vacation and skip the 1 on 1 with the DR until I get back. I find out then that one egg barely hung in there and we are now a statistic for IVF failure due to the low dosage of HCG that was given. So they are offering to do another round for free (I pay meds again). Has anyone ever heard of such? Dr recommends going to 10,000 on HCG next round but there might be complications-doesn't sound great.

9/18/2009 5:58 PM
Hey Addis---Glad that your transfer went well and will pray that your embies continue to grow in their new home. Lots of people have success with a day 3 so don't let that get you down. Sometimes they just start off slow too. I know on one of my own cycles, they moved me up to a day 3 because on day 2 it didn't look so great. By day 3 it was at 10 cells so you just never know. I have read that it takes 6-10 days post egg retrieval for the embryos to implant so just try to take it easy and put your feet up as much as you can the next week or so. Also be sure to drink lots of water. It helps the blood flow circulate better and that makes our uteruses happier. I know the 2ww is the worst. Will be hoping for a BFP for you. Good luck!

9/18/2009 5:19 PM
Hello ladies hope everyone is doing fine. Wannabemommy---thanks for your response, I wasn't online the last 2 days. My transfer was Wednesday, My 3 embies didn't do as well as last time - 2 are at 4' and 1 at 5' as per the doc. last cycle they were 6 and above but it was failed cycle anyway. So Doc recommended day 3 transfer according better place to grow is inside...I pray all goes well this time and get positive PT on Oct 1st. Hard time waiting for the rest. I asked the Doc about the bed rest afte the first day and she said no evidence suggest that complete rest has any know effect. I went back to work the next day and trying not to do any excessive walking or going up and down. After this I can say that everytime your body react different. The can't answer why even with the 2nd cycle there was less follicles than last time...

I see that a couple of you have post pond for a couple of months. I pray that things will work out for us all. And our prayers will be answered with the gift of blessing that God gives women.

9/17/2009 7:36 PM
Addis---just wanted to follow up with you to see how your 3 embies were doing. Hope they are growing well. When is your transfer. Best of luck to you!

Happyheart---good luck with your next cycle. Wish you all the best!

9/17/2009 3:42 PM
I went to see my RE yesterday and had a great appt. He told me that he is really conservative with the 5 day bedrest b/c the implantation can take 3-5 days, so he would rather be more on the conservative side.

He encouraged us to do another ivf cycle where we can stimulate me to produce more eggs. My DH and I decided we only wanted to be stimulated for 10 eggs and now that we know how my body responds, we are open to having him stimulate for more. (It was our first ivf cycle).

So we are praying about doing a 2nd round, so be praying for us.

9/15/2009 1:32 AM
Thanks WannaBeAMommy. how r u doing? Your wishes came thru and out of the 5 only 3 fertilized. I pray all will go together to the big day. Any advise on the stomach pains discomfort that the Estrace and Endometin vaginal insert gives u?

Good luck to everyone if they are doing something this week!

9/14/2009 12:34 PM
addis09---Congrats on your egg retrieval. Hope all goes well and you have lots of fertilized eggs tomorrow!

Snowie, isn't your FET coming very soon? For some reason I have 9/14 in my head.

Good luck to everyone!

9/13/2009 11:57 PM
Hello ladies, hope everyone is doing well. I would like to report that I had my ER at noon today. And had a very different experience than my first cycle, I would guess because it is a clinic with different doc everytime performing.. I am on pain killers and trying to take it easy till I hear when ET will be on 3 or 6. I had only 5 good ones to get. I pray they will mature well all of them. I read one time from one of the ladies experience that pineapple had a good effect is that correct please advise! I am trying to avoid the pain i went thru in my first cycle.

I wish everyone the best and i pray for each one of us during this journey.

9/11/2009 10:07 PM
AJET-thanks for your input from your doctor. I meet with my dr. on 9/16 and will ask him about the 5 day bedrest too.

9/8/2009 5:03 PM
HappyHeart: Met with my doc on the 31st and he thinks my problem is that my body produces enough hormones for the average woman but not enough for the eggs that my body produces. So, the hormone regimine will be different.

8/27/2009 7:09 AM
Thanks guys on the advice about the heart beat monitor- I am defintintly going to get one

8/26/2009 7:21 PM
You can go on EBAY and search "fetal heart beat monitor" and there are doppler's on ther for around 80 dollar brand new. I am going to buy one if i get my BFP

8/26/2009 5:07 PM
Hey Dottie, I rented a heartbeat doppler from Heart Tones (you can find them online). The device cost appr. $20 dollars a month. I rented one after I started spotting at 16 weeks... Before then I was finding excuses to go to the Dr. weekly, just to sneak in a little sound.

Im currently 20 weeks pregnant after 4 miscarriages, 4 failed IUI's and one IVF and I listen to the little guy daily.. (I was recently told by my obgyn I needed a new hobby besides being pregnant :0 ).

If you need more info, let me know, I can look up all the info on the packaging...

Tiff

8/26/2009 4:22 PM
Kristina1970- I am almost 7 weeks prego and went for my first u/s today- we have one baby and we could see the heart beating- but could not hear it. What are you using to hear yours? And when did you start hearing it on your own?

8/25/2009 7:14 AM

Oh one more thing i too made cysts for 6months before they were small enough to start IVF med's
Just do one thing at a time.

8/25/2009 7:13 AM

Hey girly. I too am 39 and i done my IVF med's in may. I only had one embie that looked good.
Had it transfered on day 3 and well on day 7 past the transfer i got my first positive result.
Needless to say i am now 17 weeks prego and feeling the baby move. I liston to the heartbeat like 2times a day everyday. and on sept 10th i get to find out what i am having.
So hang in there,. It can in will happen all on GOD'S time of course.

8/24/2009 9:54 PM
So, I had my baseline U/S and B/W today. Been on lupron since 8-13. The tech said the ovaries and the lining looked like they should and I should be seeing her in a few days after starting the follistim..I was so excited to finally be "getting going". Then the nurse called and said my estradiol is 127 and they want it to be 50 or under 100 would be acceptable. So I have to stay just on lupron until next week and have another baseline on Thurs. I am really anxious about this. I know my estradiol was high with my challenge test and that could be a sign of ovarian failure due to my age (39). What do they do if the level doesn't come down? Is that what the lupron should do? I had just finished my period...would that make the level high? They also said I had a cyst on my left ovary..which I know I had when I started this whole work up for IVF. THis is enough to make a person crazy at times. I had starred and higlighted my calendar for when I thought I would have the ER and ET and have changed it 2-3 times so far. I can't stand the lack of control over any of this...on the positive..I don't have any effects from being on lupron like I've heard there can be. Guess I'll just "suck it up" and stay positive! Any info would be appreciated!!

8/23/2009 8:01 PM
Happyheart--I meet with my doc on the 31st so I'll ask him then.

8/23/2009 7:00 PM
I've seen it advertise, but don't know much about it. Has anyone ever tried it? I would love your input.

8/23/2009 9:05 AM
What about that at home conception kit that is advertised on here. to the left of all the posts?

8/22/2009 10:55 PM
Since we are trying "on our own" for the next few months, does anyone have any suggestions on good "ovulation kits?" In the past, I just buy the urine stick tests at the drug store. Has anyone else tried another test that helps know when they are most fertile or about to ovulate?

8/21/2009 7:19 PM
happyheart- I got my BFN on August 12th. It was after my first IVF attempt. My RE's plan for me was to try on our own this cycle. She said that after a stimulation cycle that the drugs have an effect on your body for 3 months after that. She said that follicles that didn't come to the surface last month were stimulated too, and that they pop up and mature over the next two months. She wants me to come in for a progesterone level 7 days after ovulation this month because she said that women getting pregnant on their off cycle is not rare, so she wants to make sure that everything is in order in case we do succeed on our own. Then if we aren't pregnant then we will stim again with the next cycle (we had no frozen embies) and that it will have an additive effect with this last stimulation to maximize our numbers and chances. This is just my experience. I will interested to see what other doctors are saying. I hope that this helps!

8/21/2009 4:20 PM
Hello everyone - I wanted to say to all of you that have gotten bad news this time how sorry I am. I wish there was something to be said to make it easier on you, but there isnt. I know the feeling and remember how devastating it was. All you can do is look to the future when we will all finally get our BFPs. It is a long road, this ivf thing, but when we get there all of the ups & downs will be worth it in the end. At least we have support until then

8/21/2009 3:02 PM
Hello all... I posted on the other site that I got a BFN after my first ivf attempt (we also had 6 failed IUI's), so I am feeling discouraged, but not hopeless.

AJET- did you ask your DR about the 5 bedrest? I was also on BR for 5 days and curious to ask my DR.

Several of you mentioned that the drugs / hormones stay in a our body awhile after an ivf cycle. Do you know how long? Does that increase chances of pregnancy the old fashioned way? I was just curious. Any information would be helpful.

8/20/2009 7:50 AM
Yes the baby asprin is for blood thinning. Each dr has their own protocol. Mine was as follows:

BCP on day two of my menses
lupron overlaps a week before active bcp runs out
base line u/s and b/w
start stims
b/w and u/s and stims for 12 days total
trigger shot
NO SHOTS FOR 1 whole day
retrieval
fertilization report - decided 5 day transfer Day after E/R
Day after E/R start PIO shots, progesterone suppositories, estrogen patches, and 1 baby asprin daily
Day 2 after E/R also added a steriod pill and an anti biotic pill- I took those through the day of transfer
Continued PIO shots, progesterone suppositories, estrogen patches (new each week) and baby asprin until released to O/B (or in my case until i m/c)

Now as i understand it all so far my FET will be different and MUCH easier

8/20/2009 4:40 AM
Hey everyone...so sorry for the BFN this week. Can't imagine how everyone deals with it. But it sounds like both of you are very strong and determined..I will say some prayers for both of your recoveries and for moving forward.

Day 7 of lupron for me and baseline u/s and b/w on Monday to start stims..the lupron hasn't been bad..no hot flashes or headaches. I keep waiting but so far so good. Can I ask what the baby aspirin is for? Blood thinning! Just wondering because I'm not sure that's going to be part of my regime...thinking of everyone!

8/19/2009 11:39 AM
Snowie--that is a really good point. I will definitely ask him. Thank you so much for bringing it up. Yes, I did take a baby asprin every night.
